Pier Intelligence

Docking & Disembarkation Variables

The Island: Formerly Little San Salvador Island. 2,400 acres, only ~50 developed. Bahamas archipelago. Owned by Carnival Corporation since 1996. Now rebranded "RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay."
Key Insight: Currently a TENDER PORT. Ships anchor ¼ mile offshore; you ride tender boats to shore (~10-15min). ⚠️ A new north-side dock is under construction—expected to open mid-to-late 2026 for Carnival ships. Holland America ships will continue tendering on the south side. Rough seas CAN cancel the port call entirely.

Getting Ashore

  • Current: Tender boats (~10-15min ride)
  • 2026+: New north pier for Carnival ships
  • HAL ships: Will continue to tender (south)
  • Tender wait: 15-45min depending on crowds

Island Layout

  • Welcome Center: Info, excursion desk, shops
  • Beach: 2+ miles of crescent white sand
  • Food Pavilion: Free BBQ lunch
  • Nature Preserve: 2,350 acres of wild bird habitat

Getting Back to Your Ship: TENDER PORT CRITICAL

Golden Rule: The tender line back to the ship is the #1 complaint at Half Moon Cay. In the final hour, EVERYONE is trying to get back. Lines of 45+ minutes are common. Do NOT wait until the last tender announcement. Start heading back well before you think you need to.

Step-by-Step Calculation Example:
  1. Last tender time: 4:00pm
  2. Subtract tender line wait (30-45min): 3:15pm
  3. Subtract tender ride (15min): 3:00pm
  4. Add safety buffer (30min): 2:30pm

RESULT: Start heading to departure pavilion by 2:30pm

Tender Line Tips:

  • Book ANY excursion = priority tender
  • Clamshell/cabana = priority tender
  • Depart pavilion has misting, cold towels
  • Listen for ship horn blasts (final call)

Walk Times on Island:

  • Welcome Ctr → Tender dock: 5min
  • Food Pavilion → Tender: 8min
  • Far beach → Tender: 15-20min
  • Tender ride to ship: 10-15min
