Pier Intelligence: Read Before You Go Ashore

Juneau Has 4 Docks — Which One Matters to YOU

Critical Reality: Juneau is primarily a docked port , but pier location varies significantly by ship size and daily congestion. When 5+ large ships crowd the waterfront, overflow vessels anchor and tender. Check your ship's daily newsletter the night before.

The 4 Dock Codes

  • CT (Cruise Ship Terminal): Best spot — walkable to tram & town
  • AS (Alaska Steam Dock): Walk right onto S. Franklin St.
  • FKL (Franklin Dock): Slightly north — 5-10 extra min walk via Seawalk
  • AJD (AJ Dock): ⚠️ ~1 mile south — requires shuttle ($3/day pass, every 15min). Add 20-30min buffer.

Tender Conditions

  • Port limits 5 large ships/day — overflow anchors
  • Tender drop: near Seadrome floatplane dock
  • Tendering steals 60-90min of your day
  • Book ship excursion = priority tender ticket
  • Glacier flight ops: helicopter tours are weather-dependent — overcast cancels landings

Critical Warnings

Weather Reality

  • 220+ days of rain per year — pack layers
  • Waterproof jacket + shoes: mandatory
  • Helicopters cancel in cloud/fog — have backup plan
  • Don't pre-buy tram ticket — check sky first
  • Whale watching runs in rain (boat has heated cabin)

Pier & Tender Alert

  • AJ Dock = 1 mile south, shuttle required
  • Tendering: 60-90min lost — don't book tours starting within 2hrs of arrival
  • 2026 Caps: Max 5 ships & 16,000 passengers/day (12k on Saturdays)
  • AJ Dock guests: add 30min to all travel estimates

Glacier Trip Tips

  • Mendenhall shuttle must be pre-booked (2026 caps)
  • Visitor Center closed Saturdays in season
  • Allow 1hr for Nugget Falls hike (flat, wet trail)
  • Bring binoculars for glacier face views
  • Bears frequent Steep Creek trail — keep distance

Save vs. Splurge

  • Whale watching: local operators $79 vs ship $130+
  • Mendenhall shuttle: $65-80pp vs ship excursion $100+
  • Tram: worth $50 only on clear days
  • Helicopter: ship price often same as local — compare
  • Uber/Lyft operate here but cars are scarce on heavy port days

Getting Back to Your Ship: The Work-Backwards Method

Golden Rule: Never plan to arrive "at the pier" at all-aboard time. Plan to be back in your cabin. Your ship's all-aboard time is the LAST moment you can board—not when you should arrive.

Step-by-Step Calculation Example:
  1. All-aboard time: 5:00pm
  2. Subtract security (15-30min): 4:30pm
  3. Subtract travel (Mendenhall = 25min shuttle): 4:05pm
  4. Add safety buffer (30min): 3:35pm

RESULT: Leave glacier area by 3:35pm

Add Extra Buffer If:

  • Docked at AJ Dock (+30min shuttle)
  • Ship is tendering (+60-90min)
  • First time in port (+30min)
  • Helicopter tour with gear return (+20min)

Typical Travel Times:

  • Downtown → CT/AS Pier: 5-10min walk
  • Mendenhall → Pier: 25-30min shuttle
  • Auke Bay (whale watch) → Pier: 35-40min
  • AJ Dock shuttle → downtown: 15min
